THE VILLANUOVA BOROUGH

Starting from the top of the hill, under the ramparts of the Gancia mansion,

on the way down toward the San Leonardo Square stands the ancient Customs House, the façade carries the heralds of the town and of the Savoy Royal Family.

Just afterward on the right is the Belvedere path, the narrow road through the clustered houses is one of the most scenic of the Villanuova borough. From here one can see the lowest part of town and the adjacent villages of Cassinasco, Rocchetta Palafea, Moncucco and Calamandra Alta which were the fortified towns opening the Langhe region.
The elegant San Leonardo Square is delimited by the church of San Rocco and San Leonardo, the first is an important example of the Piedmont Baroque, built in 1727 to host the “lapidarium”. The origin of the parish Church of San Leonardo goes back to 1070 when Saint Guido, bishop of the town of Acqui, authorized Gandolfo and Oggero, Lords of Canelli, to edify a church as part of the castle.

Proceeding down on the “Sternia” way, typical cobblestone road made of stones from the local Belbo Stream, leading to the “new” borough and to the San Tommaso Square.
This route is framed by the Fantozzi House, with its pastel colour and the sober frescoes typical of the Monferrato area, the “Pissooc” the ancient access for the carriages to the Villanuova borough limits, the “Piagg” where the toll had to be paid. The vineyards on the tuff soil depict the background of the whole itinerary.
